Airport and Shuttle Information
If you are flying to the Pasadena/Los Angeles area, the nearest airports
are Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Bob Hope/Burbank Airport
(BUR), and Ontario International (ONT). LAX offers more flight options,
but Burbank is closer and more convenient. Ontario is further from the
campus than Burbank or LAX, but may be more convenient than LAX.
To get
to the Caltech campus from the airport: Caltech has negotiated a discounted
rate with Super Shuttle. Please mention customer code L3F94 to receive
a 10% discount. If you are arriving on Tuesday, June 17, you can request
to be dropped off at the corner of Wilson Ave. and San Pasqual St. You
can then proceed to the SFP Check-In Fair in the Gates Courtyard north
of the Gates Building (#26) and between buildings #30 and #31.
If you arrive at other times and will check-in with Housing first, you
can request to go directly to the Housing Office. The Super Shuttle stop
for the Housing office is S1. To learn more about Super Shuttle and to
arrange transportation, please visit the Super Shuttle web site at www.supershuttle.com.

Unless you have made other arrangements with the Housing
Office, non-Caltech students may move into campus housing beginning
at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, June 17. The Check-In Fair begins at 9:00 am
and orientation activities begin at 2:00 pm. Students who arrive before
12:00 pm may store
their luggage in the Student-Faculty Programs office until housing check-in
time at 12:00 pm. After
SFP Check-In, you will need to report to the Housing Office (building
86 on a campus map). They will give you information about your housing
assignment and give you directions to your room.
If you arrive before 2:00 pm, please come to the Check-In
Fair in Gates Courtyard north
of the Gates Building (#26) and between buildings #30 and #31. Along
with storing your luggage, we will help you complete your I-9 form (if
you are being paid via the Caltech payroll system) and answer any questions
you may have. We will also direct you to the Card Office in the Caltech
Bookstore (#51) where you can get your photo ID card. There will be a
lot of students getting cards on that day, so please be patient. It is
especially important for students working at JPL to get their cards on
Tuesday, June 17, because the bus schedule to and from JPL will make it
difficult for you to get to the Card Office during business hours on another
day.
Unless you have made arrangements with your mentor, you
should plan to use your time on Tuesday to settle into your room and take
care of administrative details, so that you can start your project on Wednesday.
Orientation for all students in all SFP programs will be held the afternoon
of Tuesday, June 17. Here is a schedule of activities:
9:00 am - 1:30 pm - SFP Check-In Fair (outdoors, Gates
Courtyard north of the Gates Building (#26) and between buildings #30
and #31.)
12:00 pm - Housing Check-In
2:00 pm - SFP Students Group Picture (outdoors, on the east side
of Parsons-Gates)
2:30 - 4:00 pm - SFP Orientation (Baxter Lecture Hall, enter
on south side of Baxter, building 77)
4:30 - 6:00 pm – Finish check-in, I-9 completion,
housing move in, get ID card, etc.
SURFSAC Campus Tours
6:00 pm - Barbecue for students and mentors (Dabney Lounge
and Gardens, #40 on campus map)
Students working at Caltech:
Students doing their research at Caltech will begin their projects on
Wednesday morning, June 18, unless they have made other arrangements with
their mentors.
Mandatory Safety Meeting: Wednesday, June 18, 1:30 PM in
Baxter Lecture Hall (#77)
Students working at JPL:
7:15 AM, Wednesday, June 18: Meet at the corner of San Pasqual Street
and Holliston Avenue. Buses will take JPL students to the Lab for orientation
activities, safety training, and lunch. In order
to receive your permanent badge, you are required to provide
proof of citizenship. You
must have these documents with you to board the bus.
You will meet your mentor and begin your project on Wednesday
afternoon. You will be issued a temporary badge upon arrival.
All Non-Caltech Students:
Special Orientation Session: Thursday, June 19, 6:30 PM, Dabney Lounge
(#40). Dinner will be provided. This meeting will introduce you to Caltech
and Pasadena and will provide important information to help make your
stay on the campus comfortable and enjoyable.
Students whose award is being paid through the Caltech payroll system:
First check will be issued on Tuesday, July 1. Please keep this in mind
when deciding how much money to bring with you.
Non-Caltech students may use the following address for mail and small
packages over the summer:
(your name), SFP Student
California Institute of Technology
Mail Code 08-31
Pasadena, CA 91125
If you are living in campus housing, you can pick up your
mail in the Student-Faculty Programs office Monday through Friday from
8:00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. (We close for lunch.) On weekdays
after 5:00 pm and all weekend you can swipe your conference/dining card
to enter the door on the north side of Parsons-Gates. Just walk down the
stairs on the north side of our building, swipe your conference/dining
card (not your Caltech photo ID), and enter the vestibule to pick up your
mail. If you experience any trouble accessing the vestibule, you can
call Security at (626) 395-4701 for assistance.
Note that because of the large number of non-Caltech students,
we will not be able to inform you when mail has arrived.
If you have not yet secured health insurance that covers you for the duration
of your stay at Caltech, please remember to do so and to provide us with
the Health Insurance Verification form. **You will not be allowed to
begin your project until this insurance is in place.**
